چکیده

Radar meteorology applications rely on pulsed weather radars that survey the atmosphere and estimate a set of meteorological variables for each resolution volume. The reliability of these applications depends on the quality of the supplied data. To reduce the statistical uncertainty of estimates of spectral moments and polarimetric variables for each resolution volume, weather radars often average signals from many pulses. Therefore, the variance reduction of averaged estimates is inversely proportional to the equivalent number of independent samples MI. This number is given by

Processing of Oversampled Signals in Range on Polarimetric Weather Radars with Mismatched Channels

Processing oversampled signals in range with a whitening transformation has been proposed as a means to reduce the variance of meteorological variable estimates on polarimetric Doppler weather radars. However, the original formulation to construct decorrelation transformations does not account for mismatches in the polarimetric channels, which results in abnormally biased polarimetric variable ...

System Requirements for Phased Array Weather Radar

Preamble This is the final report to Lockheed Martin on the requirements for a phased array weather radar. Discussed herein are those meteorological requirements that need to be met by weather radars having either reflector type antennas or active phased array elements. These requirements impact the design of the antenna, the transmitter-receiver, and signal processor. Justifications for these ...

Spectral moment estimation for weather radars using a whitening transformation on oversampled data

A method for estimation of Doppler spectral moments on pulsed weather radars is presented. This scheme operates on oversampled echoes in range; that is samples of in-phase and quadrature phase components are taken at a rate several times larger than the reciprocal of the transmitted pulse length. The aforementioned radar variables are estimated by suitably combining weighted averages of these o...
